IF YOU HAD ASKED Sasha to recall what happened after she found herself on Miss Adeline’s third-best rug, she would have sworn that she had closed her eyes for a mere second—just long enough to catch her breath between howls of laughter.

But this was not the case.

“Lyla, we need to get off the floor,” she giggled, opening her eyes again. She blinked and tried to focus on the ceiling. “Huh. Were there always stars on the ceiling? Lyla? Seriously, who put the stars up there?” She carded her fingers through the thick shag rug beneath her.

“This rug is nice,” she said, as she attempted to stroke it. “Isn’t it nice? And luxuriant.”

Sasha felt incredibly pleased with herself for remembering such a fancy word.

“And furry,” she added. That was a less fancy word, but Sasha was still pleased, nonetheless.

The very small part of Sasha’s brain that remained sober and functional quietly suggested that the rug she had fallen upon had not been as luxuriant or as furry as the rug she was currently sprawled over.

Sasha decided to ignore that part of her brain—what had it done for her lately? “I really need to get off the floor.”

“That would be an excellent plan of action.”

Sasha groaned. “Oh, no. Not you.”

“At your service,” the Shadow King’s voice said dryly.

“That’s doubtful,” Sasha muttered.

She tried to turn her head toward the voice, but it felt too heavy—more like a large boulder on her neck than a human head. She decided to focus on the starry ceiling instead, which involved less effort on her part.

“Where are you lurking, you lurking lurker?” Sasha made a showy gesture with her hand. “Reveal yourself on the count of three. One, two—”

“Three,” the King said, deadpan.

Sasha blinked, expecting to see the Shadow King in all his black-clad glory, but there was only the starry ceiling. “I still can’t see you. Where are you?”

“If you would be so good as to turn your head to the right, all will be revealed.”

“Fine, but you’d better be there,” Sasha grumbled. “Turning is much harder than it looks.”

She heroically turned her head to the right and, lo and behold, there was the Shadow King, sitting on a low footstool beside her.

“Oh,” she said, pleasantly surprised by this turn of events. “There you are!”

The Shadow King, however, did not appear to be as pleasantly surprised by this turn of events. “Here I am,” he said. “In my own chambers. Just like magic.”

With considerable effort, Sasha wagged her finger at the King. “You know, you have a lovely voice. It’s all low and warm and handsome—”

“Handsome?” the King repeated, clearly amused.

“—and it sounds the way that towels feel when they first come out of the dryer—”

“I sound like dry towels? Marvelous.”

“But then you use your lovely, dry towel voice to say all sorts of pointy things. A voice like yours isn’t meant to say pointy things. A voice like yours is meant to say round things. Like ... like ...”

“Round?”

“Yes,” Sasha said emphatically, glad that he was finally getting with the program.
